How to have a better conversation
Recently I have been thinking about how social media affects our relationships. My theory is we are getting lazy and losing the art of conversation because of using social media so much. Some of you may disagree with me but I think we can all agree we could all learn how converse and communicate better in person.
I’m the first one to admit I’m good at some things but I’m no expert at everything. So I started searching the internet because that’s what people do nowadays. We surf the world wide web for knowledge. I wanted someone who really knew what they were talking about so I punched in (TED talks while learning how to converse). I figured someone there should know. I found lots of different people and articles but this young lady Celeste Headlee, really hit home for me.
Even though I consider myself a pretty good listener I’ll be honest I had to force myself not to pick up my phone to check a message and just stay focused because I really wanted to grasp what she was saying. This complete listening thing is not as easy as you think. Check it out for yourself. One of her best points was “Listen to Understand not Listen to Reply.” Not that any of us ever do that of course. 🙂
I hope you get something out of this.
Here’s are my questions:
Do you think we are losing the art of communication and conversation?
Do you think Social media is making it harder for us to have conversations in person?
